Henry worked in the lumber industry when he was sixteen years old. He would hop on the train and take it to Bay City. He would work from early morning all day long with grown men when he was 16 years old. His grandson, Max Klohn, said his grandfather "could really swing an ax."
Later in life, his hand were arthritic from suffering in the cold so many years.
After Henry and Emma were married he farmed and Emma worked for the phone company in Deckerville. Emma died of strep throat at 58 years old. Henry spent his later years enjoying fishing.
