HELEN KNAPP HEMINGWAY

Obituary....HEMINGWAY-On Saturday, April 27th, at her home in this city, Helen, wife of A. Hemingway, in the fifty-sixth year of her age."Mrs. Hemingway was born in Windsor, Vermont, April 28th, 1833. She was one of ten children, four of whom have preceded her into that "bourn from which no traveler returns." During her life she was twice married. At the time of her first marriage she was twenty-two years old. At the age of twenty-seven she was a widow with one child, another having died in infancy. She was married to Mr. Hemingway in October,1861. One child of this marriage, Miss Hattie, survives her. Her death was caused by a cancer, which had made her for several years an invalid. The funeral took place Monday from the house, Rev. J. Hilton, of Ft. Atkinson, officiating. After long and patient suffering, the kind loving mother, the faithful companion, the true hearted friend has reached her journey's end . The last act in the drama of existence is closed for one more heart and the curtain of silence hangs before the face of the future. This silence cannot be disturbed, its secret cannot be read. But through human eyes look in vain, through human ears listen and hear no sound, there is charity in this silence, there is hope in it and beyond it there is at least rest. The peaceful face painted white and cold by the hand of death, speaks no language that can be understood. The great future is for human minds shrouded in impenetrable mystery. We only know that to the arms of the earth another tired body has been given, that on the bosom of that earth she has lain her head for the last long sleep, and that in the silent heart of earth, her heart and fate are left forever."

Notes from Shirley Hemingway:

Helen's child from her 1st marriage to Walter Bradley Knapp was Harlow B.Knapp(1859-1922). Hettie (Mrs. Edward Hager) (1868-1944) was Helen's child from her 2nd marriage to Aaron Hemingway.
