Heloise was born in Houston, Texas where her father was practicing medicine. Her mother moved to the Weston Home in Logtown, Hancock County, Mississippi while her father was in the US Army during World War I. Following the war the family moved to Jackson, Mississippi. She attended Powers Elementary and Jackson Central High School. In 1928 she started college at Sophie Newcomb University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Because of the depression, she had to transfer to the University of Mississippi from 1929-32. She then attended the Chicago Art Institute 1933-37 (3 years). She returned to Jackson where she was Queen of the Junior Auxiliary Carnival Ball in 1938. She was a Chi Omega.
