In 1834, when John was 18, he emigrated with his parents and siblings to New York. Within 10 days of their arrival, his father had died. Fortunately, his uncle provided a home for him, his mother and siblings. In 1850, after having married Ann Booth and fathered two of his three children, the family moved to Erie County, Pennsylvania.
