Alfredo P. D'Annunzio, peacefully passed away at his home in Castro Valley, CA on June 3, 2012 with his loving niece at his side. He was 97 years old.
He was the son of the late Domenicio and Giuseppina D'Annunzio of Rome, Italy. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Rome, Italy. He was the fourth of six children, and only remaining sibling.
He attended the Scuola di Disegno in Atina, Italy and then studied at the Instituta Belle Arti in Rome where he mastered his love of painting. He returned to America and joined the Army during World War II and served under General George Patton and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded at Omaha Beach, during the Normandy Invasion.
Alfredo is known throughout the United States as an accomplished oil painter. He belonged to the Palo Alto Art Club and was a member of the Society of Western Artists and the Castro Valley Arts Foundation. He had shows all over the California coast and Hawaii and in recent years displayed his art from his home during the Castro Valley Artists Tour. His art is displayed in the Tate Gallery in London, the Ichibankan Gallery in Tokyo and the Daimaru Gallery in Kyoto and the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. One of his most favorite pieces, "Conception" is on display in the Italian Museum in San Francisco.
He loved to teach others his craft and was a teacher for the Castro Valley Unified School District as well as giving private art lessons from his home until he was 95 years old.
He is survived by his niece and caregiver, Gloria Snyder, and many other nieces and nephews in California and Italy.
