Born in Lexington, Kentucky, she was the daughter of William Irvine and Mary Polly Pigman Irvine. She met Elbert Jeter, Sr. and they married on January 6, 1920 in Lexington, Kentucky. They had 12 children and eventually settled in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana.
Married January 6, 1820 in Lexington Kentucky., Sarah's husband Elbert was a Primitive Baptist Minister and Circuit rider. They moved from Lexington first to Bloomington, Illinois to Bedford, Indiana in 1827 where they were one of the first settlers, moving there 5 years after it was founded. They settled in Orleans, Indiana in 1850. Sarah and Elbert had the following children:
