John O. Hemphill, Jr. 86 of McComb died March 26, 2011 at Southwest MS Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hemphill was born on June 4, 1924 in Webster County, MS to the late John O. Hemphill Sr. and Ruby Ellen Stewart Hemphill.
He was a retired Baptist Minister and music minister. He served in numerous churches including East Union, East Fork, Mt. Zion, Moak's Creek, Tangipahoa, Ruth and Shuqualak Baptist Churches. He graduated from Springhill High School in Webster County. He was also a graduate of Mississippi College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served in the United States Marines as a corporal during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 174, past member of the McComb Noon Lions Club. Mr. Hemphill was also a faithful member of First Baptist Church of McComb and attended the Phillip Brady Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Keenagers and the Senior Adult Choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Mary Elizabeth Shaw Hemphill; one grandson Brian Hemphill and one sister Libby Joan Patrick.
Survivors include his wife Jessie Bailey Richardson Hemphill, one son Stuart C. Hemphill and his wife Rhonda of McComb; one daughter Glynda Chipley and her husband Alex of Philadelphia, MS; one sister Jenelle H. Wilson of Gulfport; one brother Gerald Ray Hemphill and his wife Susie of Lavonia, MI; five grandchildren Lisa Lewman and her husband Dan, Kenneth Kilian and his wife Amy,Carey Hemphill and his wife Kristen, Patrick Hemphill and Mallory Hemphill; five great grandchildren Anna Bryan Hemphill, Allie Renegar, Grant Renegar, Elizabeth Claire Lewman and Kenneth Kilian II; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening at Jones Funeral Home from 5 until 8 PM and continues Wednesday from 10 until services at 11 AM at First Baptist Church of McComb. Rev. Woody Rimes and Rev. Ed Sudduth will officiate and burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb.
Pallbearers will be Carey and Patrick Hemphill, Kenneth Kilian, Dan Lewman, Harry Joe Martin and Ken Wilkinson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Phillip Brady Sunday School Class and the Deacons of First Baptist Church of McComb.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church of McComb, the Baptist Children's Village or the charity of your choice.
