Hydroplane racing pioneer Rodney Carr "Doc" Brogden passed away on April 30, in Jacksonville, Fla., at the age of 90.
Rodney spent his early life in Rocky Mount, N.C., where he met and married the love of his life, Katherine Elder "Kitty" Brogden. Rodney served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and retired as an engineering supervisor from NASA after 30 years of service.
Doc began racing hydroplanes in the early 1950's and continued to drive until he suffered a mild heart attack in 1968. Forming a racing team with his son, Doug Brogden, they won the World Championship in Valleyfield Canada in 1987. In recent years Rodney and Doug have been racing Porsche cars. Doc continued to build engines and break records well into his eighties.
Rodney is preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years Katherine Elder "Kitty" Brogden, his infant son, Rodney Carr Brogden II; his father, Clarence Herman "C.H." Brogden; his mother, Addie Grant Brogden; his stepmother, Thelma Brogden; his brother, Ralph Grant Brogden, his wife, Margaret and his "adopted;" son, Julian Westfield "Buddy" Roper.
Rodney is survived by his sisters, Eleanor DeShong, Penny Frazier, her husband, Ollie; his daughter, Rhonda Brogden Stahmer, her husband, Mark; his son, Douglas Scott Brogden, his wife, Brenda; and his beloved granddaugher, Krysty Ann Brogden. Rodney is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, family, extended family and many wonderful friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., N.N., on Friday, May 6, and a graveside service will be conducted by close family friend, Mr. Terry Johnson at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd. N.N.
Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Hospice, www.nationalhospicefoundation.org.
Special thanks to Brenda who has been a beautiful daughter to Rodney and Kitty and has given them loving care for many years.
