[page 68] Asa Barker Sr., son of Timothy and Hehitable (Kimball) Barker, was born at Andover, Mass., in 1748. In 1767 he married Lucy Porter of Boxford, Mass. His occupation was farming and lumbering. In the war of 1776 he was a teamster and bore arms at the surrender of Burgoyne, at Saratoga. His wife, a small woman with dark hair and eyes, was called a "female doctress" or midwife. Because she was small and active she was nick-named "Granny Pepper." Asa with his family, came by ox team from Andover in 1793 and settled on Barker Hill in South Bridgton, near the parsonage, a year before the town was incorporated. He had a family of 16 born in Mass. Several of them died when young but the following grew up: William, born in 1757; Timothy, born in 1769; Lucy, born in 1771; Nathan, born in 1777; Sally, born in 1779; Stephen, born in 1780; Jonathan, born in 1784; Betsey and Polly (Twins), born in 1786; Asa, born in 1788; and Mehitable, born in 1790.
