The Billings Gazette (MT), 15 Feb 1939:

Death Claims Local Pioneer Late Tuesday. A. M. Crawford, 86, Gave Right of Way For Poly Drive and Planted Trees There.

Asbury M. Crawford, 86, pioneer of Billings and of Montana, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at his home following a prolonged illness. He had been in ill health for the past three years. Death was caused by infirmities due to his advanced age.
He was born Jan. 17, 1853, in Maryland.
Coming to Montana about 50 years ago, Mr. Crawford resided at Helena for several years and then came to the new town of Billings. He obtained an 80-acre plot of land here, along the present site of Virginia lane, and erected the first large home in that area.
Although a lawyer by training, he did not practice that profession here, but instead developed several orchards on the property he owned. He soon became known as an expert on tree planting and was called upon to aid in planting of hundreds of trees throughout the city.
His interest in this work led him to plant the row of trees which now shades the Poly drive and he donated the right of way for Poly drive itself. Although many local residents suggested it should be named Crawford drive, Mr. Crawford insisted it be known as Poly drive. The present Highlands Golf club site was once part of the land owned by Crawford and the evergreen trees planted on that property were planted by him. All of the family holdings on Virginia lane have been sold in recent years, except 13 acres, relatives here said. Mrs. Crawford died her April 1936.
Mr. Crawford is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William Abele of Miami, Fla.; a son, Phillip M. Crawford of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, William Crawford of Pasadena, Calif.; and four grandchildren, all of Billings. The local residents are children of the late Herbert M. Crawford, a son of Asbury Crawford.
