Lillian Hannah Brown married Herbert Verne Bailey in In Michigan, on July 21, 1901. She was born at Big Rapids, Michigan, and was a daughter of Judge Michael Brown and Mary Alice Osburn. She moved to Billings in 1901 via the railroad, and paperwork notes that her occupation at the time of her arrival was "wife." She died April 17, 1928.
We know a little more about Herbert, thanks to "The History of Montana" by Helen Fitzgerald Sanders. She wrote that Herbert V. Bailey completed his education at the Pennsylvania Military Academy, then worked with the civil engineering department of the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company.
In May, 1891, he moved to Billings, Montana, where he worked at the A. L. Babcock wholesale hardware company for 13 years mainly as its representative on the road, including five years in the mercantile business on the Crow Indian Reservation.
When the Spanish-American war began, he enlisted in Troop M, Third United States Volunteer Cavalry, and went to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he served as regimental quartermaster and squadron adjutant.
After the end of the war, he returned to Montana and resumed his mercantile activities on the reservation.
Herbert was one of the organizers of the State Bank at Columbus, Montana, of which he became cashier. He later sold his interest in the bank and in bought an interest in the W. B. Jordan & Sons' Company at Miles City, where he was the bank secretary.
"Mr. Bailey is a Republican in his political attitude but office holding has never appealed to him, business ever occupying his attention," Sanders wrote. "He has frequently, however, demonstrated his good citizenship by forwarding public-spirited measures, lending his interest and contributing financially when important civic movements have been under consideration. He belongs to Yellowstone Lodge, No. 26, A. F. and A. M., Miles City Chapter, No. 14, R. A. M., and Billings Lodge, No. 394, B. P. O. E."
