He started in business with his father, a dealer in coal, lime and cement. He erected a water-lime and plaster mill at the corner of Lock and Catawba streets in 1884 and in 1889 he fitted his mills for the manufacture of calcime plaster or plaster of Paris, a new industry in Syracuse. He was a pioneer in the stone crushing business on Rock Cut along the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad between Syracuse and Jamesville.
