Ellen married George Hilt on 22 July 1858 in Sandusky, Ohio, and filed for divorce in 1894. They had Anna, Lewis, Edward, Allen, Roselle, Gertrude, Lillie, George, and Ada. Ellen was the daughter of John L. (1811) and Ann Barrett (1809) Ross from New Jersey with siblings: Enoch (1834) born in New Jersey, Samuel (1840) born in Ohio, and John (1845) and Martha (1847) born in Pennsylvania. She was born in Georgetown, Ohio. Her father was a grocer and then a saloonkeeper. In 1870, they lived next door to her parents. Ellen died from Bright's Disease.
