Wayne Price Crume was born September 12, 1923 in Kenna, NM to the home of Helen(Elrod) and Price Thomas Crume and died May 24, 2012 at the Farwell Convalescent Center in Farwell, TX. He grew up in Kenna. Wayne's mother died when he was a young boy. He graduated from Elida High School in 1943, and on June 26, 1943 in Roswell, he was married to Carol Bird.
Wayne was drafted into the U S Army on November 6, 1943, and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge on November 6, 1945 as a member of the 70th Tank Battalion. After initial treatment in a hospital in France, he was transferred to the hospital at Fort Sam Houston. After he was discharged from the hospital, he came back to work on ranches in Kenna, Taiban and Elida, working at any job he could find to support his family.
In 1953, they moved to Henrietta, TX. After a few years, they moved to Wichita Falls, TX where they lived d until 1978. Wayne began trading land, and guns or whatever he was able to trade in order to make a living. When they left Wichita Falls, they moved to Ruidoso, and then in 1980 they moved to Clovis. A few years later, they moved to Portales. Through the years, he and his wife lived in more than 20 different homes because of Wayne's trading.
Wayne was well known as an entertainer, singing and playing his guitar and harmonica all by ear. He played at Shaky's Pizza in Wichita Falls, and at the Holiday Inn in Clovis. After moving to Portales he performed each week at Tastee Freez. He had a knack for writing songs and ditties on the spot about people and situations. When he was no longer able to perform for occasions and in public venues, he began to lose interest in life.
He is survived by Carol, his wife of almost 59 years; his son, Carson Crume of Portales; a granddaughter, Stacey Crume and a great-granddaughter, Isabella Lampe; a brother, Elwin Crume of Clovis; and two sisters, Rowena Preuit of Portales and Verdine Howard of Farmington, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Phillip Crume and a son, Kim Phillip Crume who died at age 5.
