Roger Metcalf was the son of Zebulon Metcalf and his wife Lydia Bourn of CT. His mother died in 1779. His father remarried a widow (who was also his cousin) with nine children.

Roger married Lois Peabody in CT on January 1, 1794 and went west with his new bride in the company of his father Zebulon and step-mother Mary, three brothers, two cousins and a number of step-siblings to the wilds of Otsego County NY.
The Metcalf family settled in the northern part of the County in an area known as Pierstown.
Eventually the Metcalfs owned four adjoining farms at the top of a wide ridge and the area became known as Metcalf Hill Settlement.

Roger and Lois had seven children; Andrew, Elias P., Philanda, Chauncey, Emely, Lois, and Carolina E..
Roger, in addition to his farmland, had a lot in the village of Cooperstown and set up a tannery.

Roger's wife Lois died in 1815 at the age of 38, four years after the birth of her last child.
Roger remarried a Sarah (Sally) Jenkins, a widow with three sons, in 1818.

Roger moved westward again(probably leaving his farm run by son Andrew to whom he later sold the land) sometime after 1830 and lived with his son Chauncey in Geneseo, NY.
His wife Sarah died there in 1852. Roger died in Geneseo in 1857 at almost 90 years of age.
