Silas Wright Bowman was born July 17, 1887 in Arkansas, son of James E. Bowman and Mary Frances 'Fannie' Chauncey.

Bowman, a farmer, age 46, born September 1853 in Arkansas; and his mother, Fanny E., age 43, born November 1856 in North Carolina. The census shows that James and Fanny had been married 24 years and had given birth to 12 children, of which 8 were still living. Also living in the household were Silas' siblings: James E. Bowman Jr., age 16, born July 1883; Cabot C. Bowman, age 14, born June 1886; John L. Bowman, age 11, born February 1889; Mattie M.
