Martha Sturdivan was born April 14, 1842 in Rock Island, Illinois, and died at her home in Laurens, January 5, 1910. She was united in marriage to Abraham Metcalf March 31, 1864, at Rock Island. Three years after this she moved with her husband to Poweshiek County, where they lived for ten years. From there they moved to Missouri and from Missouri to Nebraska. Twenty two years ago they came to Laurens, where she has since resided. Mr. Metcalf died March 17, 1902.
To Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf were born seven children: Myron, who died in infancy; Frank C., of Long Prairie, Minn.; William B., of Winnepeg, Can.; Albert I., of Harlan; Nettie E. of Grinnell; Chas. M., of Clearwater, Minn.; and Mary E. Ashmore of this place. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Ed. Sparks, of this vicinity, to mourn her loss.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church last Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Lory. Burial was made in the Laurens Cemetery.
