Obituary
**************************************************
Mrs. John C. Hale was born in Speedwell, VA, February 22, 1861, and died at her home on January 30th, 1914.

In a typical Virginia home, of that type for which Virginia is justly famous, with her parents, Ballard E. Ward and Amelia G. Nuckolls, her early life was spent. There she came to know god; there, when she was 12 years old, she joined the Methodist Church; there, she developed the traits of character that made her life blessed. She was the only daughter of Ballard C. Ward and his wife Amelia G. Nuckolls, daughter of Clarke Nuckolls and wife Rosa B. Hale.

Miss Laura Frances Ward was married to John C Hale, of Centre, AL, in Spring Valley, VA, August 20th, 1880; Rev. Floyd Nuckolls saying the rites.

Mrs. John C. Hale was a mother of four children. Misses Stella Gwynn Hale, Virginia, and Virginia Hale, a member of the senior class at Centenary College, survive her. Miss Susie Hale died June 16, 1887, and the only boy, B. C. Hale, died in 1898, preceded her in death. Recently, a brother, Jim Ward, died in Roanoke, VA, leaving a widow and one son, while four other brothers survive her. They are Ernest and Jim Ward, Pocahontas, VA, L H Ward, Spring Valley, and Floyd Ward, Gene, Illinois. Her husband, John Clark Hale, must pass the remainder of the way without her, after 34 years of her priceless aid and Christian society.

Mrs. Hale was a most devoted and unselfish member of the church, the Sunday School, and a leader in all women’s aid and missionary societies. As long as strength allowed, she attended all services of the sanctuary and excited this principle of beautiful loyalty into family and friends. Her professions were absolutely pure. Her pew is vacant---we reiterate, Vacant!

Fast friend, good mother, and a sweet spirit! Ever and anon may we see thy beautiful silhouetted in the Far Seas, wafting smiles of approbation to our best endeavors as in days of yore. Feathered songsters will keep vigil over thy grave at the margin of the river (Garrett Cemetery), while zephyrs will usher in the shower and dew-drop to refresh flowers that grow in thy memory. Fare thee well.
