Ray was the son of the late Lorenzo C. & Dora F. (Fitzwater) Ketterman.

Ray first wife, Mattie (Wilson) Ketterman preceded him in death in October 1957 and his second wife, Dolly (Haggerty) Ketterman preceded him in death in June 1993. Two grandsons, a son-in-law, two brothers and a sister also preceded him in death.

Ray was the father of six sons, Doug Ketterman, Paul S. Ketterman, Jimmy Ketterman, Kenneth Nelson, Clyde Ketterman and Donald Ketterman. Four daughters, Sylvia Gorman, Judy Hyre, Deb Taylor and Viola "Squirt" Shipp.
