Michael McCarty was born in 1835 in Kells, County Meath, Ireland. In 1845, Michael's father, Patrick with a family of 10 children 7 boys 3 girls came to the U.S. landing in New Orleans the 6th day of February 1846. Two years after coming to the U.S. another son was born, one son died in Ireland and another died at sea. Patrick moved his family and purchased a farm in Daviess Co Indiana. Mike married Mary Catherine Fitzpatrick on 13 Jan 1871. They moved to the Walnut, IA area in 1871. Mike and Mary lived on a farm and later moved into town. He died in Oct 12, 1908 in Walnut, Pottawattamie Co, Iowa. They had four boys and five girls.

Mike McCarty, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of this county, died at his late home in the eat part of town, Monday evening, October 12, at 8:30 o'clock, after an illness of three weeks. The largely attended services were conducted by Rev Father P. H. Gaffney were held at St Patrick's Catholic church, after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Walnut Catholic Cemetery. Anne G. McCarty born 18 Oct 1889, and Stella Jane McCarty born 08 May 1886 and died 29 Jun 1886.
