Gladys R. Ambrose Doane, age 62, of North Sandwich NH, died January 6, 2001, at her home. She was born in Tamworth on April 12, 1938, the daughter of the late Arnold and Ruth (Berry) Anthony. She grew up in Tamworth NH, then moved to North Sandwich when she married the late Langdon J. Ambrose in 1955.

When Mr. Ambrose became disabled, along with caring for him, Gladys became a homeworker for Annalee Dolls of Meredith in 1986 and was known there as the "Deer Lady" because she made so many of them--over 150,000 of the 10-inch figures during the next 14 years, along with many other varieties. Along with being a doll maker, she was also an excellent cook and proficient with all types of needlework and crafts. Not to be house-bound, she loved the outdoors and always had flowers and vegetables growing in some fashion around the yards. During the farming years, she was familiar with the operation and maintenance of such equipment, a true "teammate" in all aspects of life.

Shortly after the death of Mr. Ambrose in 1988, her childhood sweetheart David Doane reappeared in her life; and they were married in 1992, 40 years to the month after their first meeting. They often referred to themselves as "Recycled Teenagers."

Gladys leaves her husband David Doane of North Sandwich; son Langdon Ambrose II of Tamworth; grandsons Jesse Ambrose and Joshua Ambrose, both of Sandwich; sisters Elva Parks of Tamworth, Shirley Frost of Freedom NH, and Janice Couch of Cedar Vale KS; brothers Warren Anthony, David Anthony, and Bruce Anthony, all of Tamworth, Stanley Anthony of Conway NH, and Chester Anthony of Yucaipa CA; and many nieces, nephews, and others.

She was predeceased by her brother Harry Anthony.

Burial will be in Rural Cemetery in North Sandwich later in the spring.
