William was born in County Derry, Ireland, the fifth of six children born to Thomas Louden and Mary Jane Kennedy. His youngest sister Rachel was born in Quebec after the family immigrated in 1848.
When his family moved to Ontario, William returned to Huntington, Quebec, to marry Anna Vance in 1867. After 12 years back in Edwardsburgh the couple moved to the States, farming in North Dakota while raising 13 children.
After retiring the couple lived several years in Winnipeg beginning about 1912 before returning to Bathgate. As their son Alexander moved to Saskatchewan at the same time, it may have been related to the Canadian government offering free land to families willing to settle the western provinces.

Death of W.J. Louden
Many old time friends of W.J. Louden, a pioneer of Neche township, did not hear of his death which occurred Monday morning, Sept. 2nd, at about 8:00 o'clock, and consequently were unaware that his earthly career had terminated, and that Pembina county had therefore lost another of its early pioneers, a man who had done much to help make the early history of the county.
William John Louden was born in Ireland, October 11th, 1844 and consequently was nearly 74 years of age at death. He came to Canada with his parents and settled in Prescott, Ont. On September 25, 1867 he was united in marriage to Annie Vance. There were born to his union thirteen children, two of whom died in childhood. The remaining living children are as follows:
Alexander of Meyronne, Sask;
Mrs. James McEwen of Glasston, N.D.;
Mrs. C. J. Carey of Victoria, B.C.;
Mrs. Henry Stephenson of Meyronne, Sask.;
William J. Louden of Minneapolis, Minn.;
Mrs. S.E. Dawson of Toma, Wis.;
Mrs. Lionel Falconer of Winnepeg, Mna.;
Arthur F.D. of Lowell, Arizona;
Herbert Joseph P. of Bathgate
Harrison Louden of Bathgate.
The deceased came to North Dakota in 1879, locating in Pembina County. He had held several important positions of trust in the county, helped to organize school district 29 in Neche township, was clerk of Neche township board and also served on county drainage board. Also helped to organize the Pembina County Mutual Fire Insurance Co.
Mr. Louden's home was open house and the latch string always on the outside.
Rev. Beardsley of Neche, preached the funeral sermon and the Mason's Lodge conducted the funeral.
