John Franklin Adams served in Company A, 51st Alabama during the Civil War as inscribed on his tombstone.

His spouse was Sarah A. Woods Adams. Among their children were John, Charles Dunlop, Lottie W., and Jessie Florence Adams. Jessie married John Kirkland and they are buried in Tillison Cemetery. Charles Dunlop Adams and wife, Mary Eugenia "Lula" Sears Adams, are also buried in Tillison Cemetery.

John and Sarah and children, John, C.D. and Lottie were enumerated on the 1880 census. John was a widower by the 1900 census living with three of his children, Charles, Lottie and Jessie in the home. 1910 John's daughters, Jessie Adams, and Fannie Martin and her husband, Zeb M. Martin, and two of the Martins children were in the household with John Franklin Adams. 1920 John is residing with Jessie Adams Kirkland and her husband, John A., and two Kirkland children.
