Our dad was born October 15, 1920, to Cleo and John Walter Adams in Springfield, Mo. At a very young age, his family moved to Tucson, Ariz. John graduated from Tucson High School where he met the love of his life, Hazel Richardson, during their senior year. It did not take long for the high school sweethearts to decide they would spend the rest of their lives together. John and Hazel married July 28, 1940. They remained in Tucson until John joined the Navy during World War II.
After the war was over, John and Hazel and their two young boys, David and Frank, moved to Oceanside, Calif. The family quickly grew to include five more children: Paul, Richard, Mark, Kevin, and Sharon. John worked on Camp Pendleton as an electrician for nearly 30 years before he retired in 1982.
Our dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His greatest joys were his wife and family. He was always there for us. He looked forward to every Sunday evening where "taco night" became a tradition for the Adams family and friends.
Our dad was an active member of the First Christian Church for many years. He acted as deacon, chairman of the board, as well as volunteered to do maintenance whenever needed. He was a Little League coach for many years, encouraging Oceanside youth to excel in sports. He instilled in his family a love of Yosemite, where we continue to spend many summer vacations.
In 2006, our dad lost the love of his life, Hazel, to Alzheimer's disease. He had been her tireless caregiver throughout the course of her illness. They had been sweethearts for more than 66 years, serving as role models to their children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren, demonstrating the true meaning of the words "in sickness and in health, until death do us part." John was also preceded in death by his oldest son, David, in 2003.
He is survived by his sons, Frank and wife Diane, Paul, Richard, Mark, Kevin and wife Terry, and Sharon. He also leaves his grandchildren, Stephanie, Jeff, Chris, Seth, Ryan, Cory, Reagan, Sarah, Hillary, and Sierra; his great-grandchildren, are Nick, Colton and Grady, Sophie, Gracy, and Max, and McKinsey.
Our dad will be greatly missed, but we take comfort knowing that he's with our mom, our brother, and other family in Heaven.
There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, March 26, at 10 am at the First Christian Church, 204 S. Freeman St., Oceanside, Ca, followed by a graveside service at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Oceanside. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Dr, Clarksburg, MD. Published in North County Times on March 25, 2011
