Armstead Armstrong was enlisted on May 11, 1861, at Abbeville, Alabama, by A. C. Gordon for 12 months. He mustered in to service on May 16 at Montgomery, Alabama. He was admitted to the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on March 17, 1862, suffering from "debility." He returned to duty on March 23. He was wounded August 24, 1864, at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. His wound was given as "V.S. right leg (flesh)." Pvt. Armstrong returned to duty and was captured at Petersburg on April 2, 1865. He was released on June 9, 1865.
Armstead Armstrong married Josephine "Josie" P. Johnson on January 14, 1867, in Henry County, Alabama.
He died June 13, 1928, in Shorterville, Henry County, Alabama, and was buried in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery west of Abbeville.
