Westfield Center -
Elizabeth B. Winter, 85, of Westfield Center, died Thursday January 3, at Lodi Community Hospital.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Westfield Center, with the Rev. Larry Marshall officiating. Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Smithville Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem is handling the arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Westfield Center Rescue Squad; or to the United Methodist Church in Westfield Center.
She was born in 1905 in Columbus to Howard and Elizabeth White Bell and married Ralph A. Winter in 1938. He died in 1986.
She earned both her bachelor's degree and her law degree from Ohio State University, and served on the legal staff of the Department of Taxation from 1930 until entered the armed services in 1943. She also practiced law in Lodi with her husband.
During World War II she was a commissioned lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. She left military service with the permanent rank of lieutenant commander, USNR, and was a full commander in the reserves.
Following the war, she joined her husband in the Lodi law firm of Winter and Winter. In 1957, she became the first woman judge in Medina County when she was elected to the municipal court bench.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Westfield Center, the American Bar Association, Business and Professional Women's Club, and Daughters of American Revolution, as well as Order of the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge, both in Lodi.
Surviving are cousins.
