Roy Alton Benson, 84, of Sterling passed away Monday, June 4, 2012 in Sterling. Visitation will be from noon to 8 pm with the family receiving friends at 6 pm Thursday, June 7 at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am Friday, June 8 at Tennant Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made in Roy's name to Gideons International in care of Tennant Funeral Home, PO Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
Roy Alton Benson, 84, of Sterling, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012, in Sterling. Roy was born Dec. 23, 1927, in Kelly, to Barney A. and Ella (Hagemeier) Benson. He went to school at Benson School in Kelly for first through eighth grade, Harding School in LeRoy for ninth grade, and graduated from Sterling High School.

He was self-employed as a farmer and general contractor and served in the U.S. Army from 1950-52 during the Korean War.

He was a Gideon for 30 years and attended the United Church of Crook. He enjoyed flying, as a private pilot, church and teaching Sunday school, and passing out Gideon Bibles.

He is survived by his wife, Elvira Benson of Sterling; son, Bill and wife Vickie of Sterling and granddaughters, Lindsay and Emily of Greeley; son, Mike and wife Jan of Julesburg and grandsons, Jeremiah and wife Amanda of Lone Tree, Jason and wife Angie of Sidney, Caleb of Julesburg; son, Rex and wife Vicki of Sterling; son, Richard of Sterling; brothers, Larry and wife Loretta of Portland, Ore., Lanny of El Paso, Texas; sister, Carol Ann Capps and husband Pat of Sunland, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Ella; brothers, Russell, Robert, and David; son, Raymond; and granddaughter, Janee.
