Around 1828, James married Lettecia Feemster, daughter of James and Martha [Love] Feemster of Bullock Creek in York County, South Carolina. James and Lettecia had eight known children.
During the Mexican–American War 1847 -1848, Capt. James A. Gaston served in Co. B, South Carolina Regiment. This company was comprised of volunteers of Chester County.
James A. Gaston departed this life on the 14th of March 1856. He was buried near his in-laws, James and Martha Feemster in the churchyard cemetery at Bullock Creek Presbyterian.
After James death, Lettecia, emigrated to Mississippi with her daughter & son-in-law, Nancy and Dudley Prewitt and is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Choctaw County,
Mississippi.
