John was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Idaho Falls, the son of Jack and Zella Mains. He attended first and second grade in Rigby, and then the family moved to Hamer, Idaho, where he finished his schooling. He was in the Boy Scouts and earned several merit badges. He also played on the high school basketball team.
He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 and stationed in the Philippines. Shortly after returning home from the Navy, he began working for Utah Power and Light as an apprentice journeyman lineman. He finished his training and became certified in 1950.
He married Velda May Barney on Sept. 5, 1947, in Idaho Falls. They lived in Rexburg until 1950, when they moved to St. Anthony. He lived there until his death, except from 1969 to 1974, when he transferred to Hamer. He had transferred back to St. Anthony before the Teton Dam broke. Velda died May 20, 1999.
John was active in the community and received a commendation from Gov. Andrus for his hard work getting the power restored after the flood. He was a member of the St. Anthony Volunteer Fire Department from 1954 to 1977. He served as fire chief from 1958 to 1959. He loved to hunt, fish, camp, four-wheel and hunt for artifacts, but mostly spent time with his family.
John and Velda were married 52 years and had five children: Felica (John) Pierotti, Aaron (Barb) Mains, David Mains, Shelly Maupin and Mark (Liz) Mains, all living in St. Anthony, except Shelly, who lived in Twin Falls. He had 14 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velda; parents; a brother, Carl; and two sisters, Audrey and Betty Marie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, in Bidwell Funeral Home, with Gary Bidwell conducting. Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and again one hour prior to services Thursday. Burial will be in Wilford Cemetery.
