Woodrow Steen, age 97, of Harrison, passed from this earth to be with his heavenly Father Tuesday, June 5, 2012, in Harrison.
He was born on October 19, 1914, in Searcy County, Arkansas, the son of William and Hannah (Elliott) Steen.
His parents; 2 sisters; and 10 brothers preceded him in death.
Woodrow was a member of Hill Top Church of Christ. He moved from Searcy County to Harrison in 1945. Woodrow, or "Woody" as known by most, loved life. He loved his family and loved meeting new people wherever he went. His only child, Norma, was the apple of his eye. He loved spending time with her and at an early age was teaching her what every little girl should know, how to hunt and fish. During his life, Woodrow was employed by Arkansas Wood Products, Nolan Plumbing and Electric, and Alltel Telephone Company, where he worked until his retirement in 1977. After retirement, Woodrow continued working in his home by cutting and pressing all the pants, shirts, and suits Elizabeth would be altering for Harrison House. They were a great team and had all of Harrison looking their best!
On a Saturday, while Elizabeth would be getting her hair fixed, you would often find Woodrow sitting on a bench whittling a unique piece of wood and wait for anyone who would dare to take a seat beside him to visit. He was an amazing storyteller! Woodrow was also an avid wood carver with "chains of wood" being his specialty. As he got older, this tradition continued inside Wal-Mart, minus the whittling but increasing the stories, while Elizabeth shopped. In his spare time, Woodrow loved to hunt, fish, and garden. He had some of the most beautiful gardens in Boone County and shared the bounty with all of his friends and neighbors. He caught some of the biggest fish and even reported to have seen an albino squirrel while hunting one day. He loved teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to hunt and fish and was even successful in teaching his son-in-law, Gerald, and grandson, Steve, how to raise a beautiful garden. He will be missed by his many friends and family who all look forwarding to seeing him again one day.
Woodrow is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth (Bolen) Steen, of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Gerald Sims; two grandchildren, Rhonda Eubanks & husband Bobby of North Little Rock, Arkansas and Steve Sims & wife Angela of Greenbrier, Arkansas; seven great-grandchildren, Dalton Sims, Hunter Sims, Bailey Eubanks, Blair Eubanks, Brit Hodge & wife Sarah, Brian Hodge & Jordan Hodge; a "slew" of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many dear friends.
