Betty Powers McWhorter, 87, wife of E.C. McWhorter, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Charleston Healthcare Center. Born May 25, 1925 in Middlesboro, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Lee and Lida Pigg Powers.

Betty was a graduate of London High School, earned her music degree at Berea College and received her teaching certificate from Eastern Kentucky University. She taught music in the Danville Independent School system for many years, directed a Body Recall exercise class for 20 years and was a member of First Christian Church of Danville. Betty began playing the organ at the London Methodist Church when she was 12 years old and played in area churches including First Christian Church, Danville. In 1990 Betty was named the "Woman of the Year" by the Business and Professional Women's Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by
a daughter; Delle McWhorter (Bill) Blair of Frankfort;
a son-in-law, Bob Dunlap of Daytona Beach, Fla;
three grandchildren; Rachael (Jon) Reigelman, Elizabeth (Casey) Shaffer and Lee Cannon (Ryan) Weatherly;
three great-grandchildren; Elijah Reigelman, Cecilia Reigelman and Josie Shaffer;
a brother; Arthur Lee (Helen) Powers, Jr. of Sacramento, Ca;
two sisters, Meda McCreary of Dayton, Ohio and Patricia (Roy) Klein of Union, Ky.;

She was predeceased by a daughter; Malinda Dunlap.

The funeral service at First Christian Church. Rev. Jerry Shepard will officiate. Burial in the Lancaster Cemetery.
