Hon. Granvilie A. Shaw, Representative in the lower house of the Legislature from Vermilion parish, was born in what is known as Nunez Island, August I4,I848. He is the son of John Shaw and Rebecca Merriman. Granville B. Shaw is one of seven children. He received his education in Orange, Texas, in Dr. Houston's school, and was in attendance at this place when the Civil War broke out. Leaving school in 1862 he joined Company B, 4th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, Silby's Brigade, and was in active service during the remainder of the war. He participated in the battles of Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Yellow Bayou, and other engagements in Louisiana. In one of these engagements he was slightly wounded, though not rendered unable for active service. After the war Mr. Shaw learned the carpenter's trade, and in 1868 came to Abbeville and engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1870 he was elected sheriff of Vermilion parish and, with the exception of the years 1873 - 74, occupied the office until 1883. In 1888 he became an independent candidate for the lower house of the Legislature and was elected by a handsome majority over the regular democratic nominee. Mr. Shaw was married, August 8, 1870, to Miss Zulma Marie Bernard. They had three living children: Daisy J., born August 2, 1871; John Berwick, born August 7, 1873, and Mercedes, born March 30, 1878.Granville Berwick Shaw was married on Oct. 25, 1871 in Abbeville, Vermillion Parish, LA. to Maria Zulma Bernard.
