Ray was born on March 18, 1917 in Bristol Township in Fillmore County, the oldest son of Burleigh and Tillie (Mouw) Ewalt. On Jan. 9, 1942 he married Ruth Johanna Anstett of Preston. He served in the U.S. Army for three years, in both the United States and Europe. He has been an American Legion member since his discharge from the Army in 1946. Following World War II, he operated a hardware store for many years. Ray also worked as a rural letter carrier for 45 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Mooney, of Minneapolis, and Shelley (Dr. David) Larson of Independence, Iowa; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 70 years, Ruth; one brother, Clint (Dorothy) Ewalt, and one sister, Shirley (Stuart) Faber.
