Avis Akers Martin, 93 formerly of Brazil, passed away at 4:20 AM, Friday, December 15, 2006 in the Hickory Creek at Sunset Nursing Facility in Greencastle, IN.

She was born June 6, 1913 in Clay County to James and Dove Girton Hedge. She was a school teacher for 33 years, teaching in Putnam County, Clay County and Gary, IN, retiring in 1973.

Avis was a 1929 graduate of Reelsville High School, a 1931 graduate of Central Normal College, and received her B.S Degree in 1953 from DePaul University. She was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church and enjoyed sewing having made over 500 quilts in her lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands, Ray Akers and Ernest Martin, 6 brothers, Maurice, Lawrence, Elvin "Bud", Clyde, John and Melvin Hedge and a sister, Ester Lorey.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Kermita English of Newtown, IN, A. Lee Bond and husband Ron of Pueblo, CO and Anita Thompson of Louisville, KY; a sister, Eva MacDonald of Brazil; 12 grandchildren, Tom Predaina, Tim Predaina, Jon English, Robert Robinson, James George, Sarah Lilley, Janet Redmond, Rebecca Sullivan, Gina Orme, Tina Kensik, Juanita Keener and April Holland, 23 great grandchildren a great great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.


Funeral Information

The Lawson-Miller Chapel will be conducting a private family service.
