Fumes Blamed in Two Deaths


The deaths of two Winfield teen-agers Jan. 1 in a parked car southeast of Winfield has been ruled due to carbon monoxide, following completion of autopsies. The two victims are Samuel Kelly, 17, and James Stanley Bass, 18. Hospitalized in Winfield from fumes in the tragedy are Dennis Kelly, 15, in critical condition, and Jim Ray Frier, 15, in serious condition. A coroner's verdict given to sheriff's officers following autopsies pointed to death by carbon monoxide fumes.


Samuel Kelly, 17, was born Feb. 2, 1952, in Winfield to Cecil and Mary Sherman Kelly. A lifetime resident of Winfield, he was a senior at the Winfield High School. Survivors include his parents of the home, one sister, Judith K. of Winfield, and his grandmother, Mrs. Grace Kelly of Winfield. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m., at the Morris Memorial Chapel with Rev. J.P. Groom officiating. Burial will be in Highland cemetery.


Services are pending at Swisher-Taylor Funeral Home for James Stanley Bass, Jr., 18. Bass was born April 12, 1951, in Winfield and made his home at Hackney until the family moved to Winfield six years ago. A graduate of Winfield High School, he was a freshman at the Southwestern College here. He was a member of the Hackney Baptist church. Survivors include his parents, James Stanley Sr. & Margaret Maxine Bass and two sisters, Marcia of the home and Mrs. Joy Payne of Concord, Calif.
