In February of 1907, Lizzie left her house to fetch water from her neighbor's pump. She stayed a few minutes to chat when all of a sudden she noticed her house was on fire. Lizzie knew that her 3 children were in that house. So Lizzie entered the building to rescue her kids and shut the door, not realizing that the eldest child had already gathered the younger two and exited the home. Lizzie's nephew, Alva Powell, ran to the house and broke down the door. Lizzie came out, extremely burned. She died just a few hours later.

Lizzie was survived by her husband, David Hamilton, whom she married on 2 September 1894, and three children, Nellie, the oldest, a little son about four years of age [Roy Russell Hamilton], and an infant of six months [Harry Waldo Hamilton]. There is one half-brother, James Roberts, of Indianapolis, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Mollie Hamilton, of this city, and Mrs. John Carr, who live a few miles south.

Lizzie is the daughter of Jack [Andrew Jackson] Hood and Lulu [Louisa] Reed.
