We note the death in Lowell of Mrs. Harriet S. Smith at her home, 1527 Middlesex street. She was a sister of the late Hiram Whitney of this town. The family formerly lived in the south part of this town and later for a time in the house now occupied by Oscar R. Spalding [1 Leland Road]. While there she attended Westford academy. After marriage she went to Lowell. She leaves her husband, James T. Smith, a daughter, Mrs. Frederick G. [Elizabeth] Austin of Detroit, Mich., three granddaughters, four nieces and one nephew. She was a member of Molly Varnum chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and a charter member of the Middlesex Woman's club.
The funeral was held at her home, Rev. C. T. Billings, former pastor of the Lowell Unitarian church, officiating. The bearers were Edward T. Carney, Charles H. Eames, C. Marshall Forest, H. Donald Melloon, William H. Wilson and Herman H. Bachman.
Burial was in the family lot in the Lowell cemetery where Rev. Mr. Billings read the committal service. The funeral was in charge of Charles H. Eames.
