This memorial website was created to celebrate the life and preserve our recollections of Donald Dean Ikenberry.

Donald Dean, aka Don Senior and/or Ike One, was born on February 27, 1932 and left us on May 17, 2012 at the age of 80. He was an awesome father, husband, son, brother and friend to those who knew him. His wife, Beverly June, preceded him in death. Married 58 years, he dearly missed her and was looking forward to seeing her again. Donald was survived by his daughter, Donna Ikenberry, her husband, Mike Vining, his son Don Ikenberry, his wife, Yolie Gutierrez, and two grandchildren. He adored his brother, Dewayne Ikenberry, and his sisters, Lena Wright and Rena Gilstrap. He missed his parents and his brothers, Dee Weldon and Maurice, who preceded him in death.

Donald was born in Springer, New Mexico. As a teenager he dropped out of high school and went into the Air Force where he spent most of his time as a Radar Operator in Kotzebue, Alaska. Upon returning from Alaska, he was stationed at Mount Laguna in California. During that time he met the love of his life, Beverly June Bruer. In the 58 years to come, Don would always say Beverly (or B.J. as he liked to call her) was one of a kind. There was no other woman just like her. They had a whirlwind courtship and married on December 20, 1952. When they married they had no home, no car, and less than $100. Donald was a hard worker and Beverly was a stay-at-home mom. Donald eventually owned a very successful trucking business, which he had for decades, hauling rock and sand all over the Southland (Los Angeles area).

When Donald was in his 60s he retired so he could care full-time for Beverly, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1998. He tenderly cared for her for 10 years before he had to find full-time private care for her. He visited Beverly almost daily for more than two years before she died from the disease on December 24, 2010.

Donald was a wonderful human being. He cared deeply for his wife and children, enjoying time spent with them. He loved visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Colorado, but he was more at home in the warmth of Hawaii. Donald moved to Hawaii to live with Don and Yolie a few weeks before his death. Though we all hoped for more time with him, he was content in knowing he was in Hawaii for his last days on earth.

Donald and Beverly were both interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as The Punchbowl on 4 June 2012. The Punchbowl overlooks Honolulu and the Pacific and is a beautiful spot visited by Donald, his two children, and their spouses, a few months prior to his death.

Donald will always be greatly missed, but he is forever alive in our hearts. We all share great memories made with him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Islands Hospice, Hawaii.
