Born in New Ulm, MN to Ernst Gottlieb Schmidt and Therese Winkelmann Schmidt. He came to Seattle WA about 1910 and continued on to Treadwell, Alaska for the gold rush. In 1917 he was a bartender in Sitka, Alaska. In 1914, he married Loova E. Davidson. Ernest came to Grays Harbor County, WA, alone, in 1922. He was a cook at the County Farm in Montesano, WA. A year before he died, Ernest was at the Mt. View Sanatorium in Tacoma, WA. He died at the hospital in Aberdeen, WA.
He was survived by two sisters, Mrs. Freda Zupher and Mrs. Lydia Behnke, Los Angles; a brother, Albert Schmidt, Los Angeles.
Funeral services were at Fern Hill mausoleum with Rev. S. Charles Shangler officiating and under Elerding's direction. Cremation followed later.
