John was a former resident of Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan. He served in the Army during World War II. After retirement from the Chrysler Corp., he moved to the Bradenton-Sarasota area in Florida. He moved to California in 1999 to be closer to his daughter, Roberta Dobbins. He adored his grandchildren, and was always inventing things. When they were little, he came up with an extension they could put on their forks to roast marshmallows at a safe distance from the fire. He loved to take each of the six grandchildren on their birthday to a toy store and let them pick out anything they wanted. He died of natural causes in Desert Hot Srings, Calif. Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Dobbins and Elizabeth Grigsby; a sister, Louella Van Dervest; and a brother, Michael Hess; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
