LAGASSE Arthur Joseph Lagasse, 80, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 in Jacksonville, FL. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred Hicks Lagasse. The graveside services will be held Saturday March 16 at 11 A.M. The family will receive relatives and friends at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 729 S. Edgewood Ave. from 7:00-8:00 PM on Friday, March 15th. The family respectfully requests no visitors to the Lagasse home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc. in Jacksonville, or to the Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428. Born in Fall River, Mass., he joined the United States Navy after high school and fought in the Philippines and Okinawa during World War II. He was a decorated nose gunner who was rapidly promoted to Chief Petty Officer. Before being sent to the Korean War, he served as security for the Blue Angels when they were stationed at NAS Jax. He did several tours of duty in the Mediterranean on both the U.S.S. Saratoga and the U.S.S. Independence where he served as both CAG Leader and Security Officer. He was sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Bay of Pigs Operation in an intelligence capacity before retiring 1963 as a Senior Petty Officer. He returned to college and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Management then spent another twenty years in government service at NARTU, NAS Jax. He was an amateur boxer in the late 30s in New Jersey and, in the 40s & 50s, he was both a championship skeet shooter and third baseman on the Navy Softball Team. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Good Sam Club (RV), the NAS Golf Club- he was an avid golfer-and was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Katherine Lagasse Hagel and her husband Gregory Sawyer Hagel of Tallahassee, FL; a son, Arthur Daniel Lagasse of St. Augustine, FL; his grandsons, Matthew Gregory Hagel of Ft. Lauderdale and Andrew Christopher Hagel of Tallahassee; his sister, Lorraine Lagasse Neilan of Quincy, Mass; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
