LAGASSE Mildred D. Hicks Lagasse, 88, died on Saturday, October 23, 2010, after several years of poor health. Mildred was born May 6, 1922, to Anne Elizabeth Thompson and William Ore Hicks in Glen St. Mary, Florida, where she grew up on a tobacco farm and attended Baker High School. After graduating, she moved to Jacksonville, and worked for a few years as a supervisor in the grading department at the King Edward Cigar Company. She married Arthur Joseph Lagasse, a naval officer from Fall River, Massachusetts, on May 26, 1943. She then became a homemaker, wife and mother. She volunteered at her children's schools, mostly for her profoundly mentally disabled son. She was a 'pink lady' volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital for many years and served as President of the Auxiliary for several years in the 60's. She loved literature and filled her home with books of every genre. She was a folk artist who decorated the lives of those she loved with her whimsical art. She was an avid gardener who was incredibly knowledgeable about various genii of plants and how to grow them successfully. Her immaculate yards were a testament to her skills and devotion to nature. She and Art loved to travel. Their joy was taking their two grandsons on trips around the southeast in their RV. They were life members of the Good Sam Club. Next to Art, her great loves were her two children, Danny and Katherine, and her grandsons, Matthew and Andrew. She is survived by her son Arthur Daniel Lagasse, her daughter Katherine Lagasse Hagel, and her grandsons Matthew (Kimberly) and Andrew Hagel, all of Tallahassee; her sister Doris Hicks Van Doran, and sister-in-law Agnes Hicks, and beloved nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 58 years; her sisters Nancy Lorena and Thelma Louise; and her brother William Ore Hicks Jr.; her sister-in-law Lorraine Lagasse Neilan and brother-in-law Raymond Lagasse. A graveside service will be held in her honor at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Jacksonville, FL. There will be a visitation Tuesday evening, October 26, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Town and Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd.
