Tom S Kent came to Houston County, Texas from Mississippi about 1870, the son of Ephraim Blane Kent and Susan Elizabeth Cain, and settled in Reynard. He was engaged in farming and ranching there and operated a general merchandise store. In 1874, he married Georgia A Beazley. They were the parents of four sons: Robert T Kent, AE Kent, Leonard Kent and George T Kent. Georgia died in 1882.

Tom married Nursie Fulghum in 1883, and she died the same year. They had one son, Ira Sidney Kent, he died when he was seven years of age.

In 1885, Tom Sr married Nellie R Hill and they had three sons and three daughters: Elizabeth, Leoti, Tom S Jr, Lloyd, Sallie Mae and Charles.

Excerpts from Reynard News as printed in the Grapeland Messenger, June 18,1906, TS Kent had his house painted and papered and it looks really nice. He had the honor of having the first painted house in this part of the county.

In about 1908 he moved to Grapeland, engaging in general merchandising and cotton buying. He was one of the original stockholders and organiziers of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank, now the First State Bank in Grapeland.

He retired in 1930, but remained active until his death in 1938.
