Benton Elam, who lived about four miles east of town on the W.T. Matters' farm, was instantly killed last Monday morning when a team of mules he was driving to plow a field became frightened and started to run.

Benton Elam was born in Greene County, Missouri, Sept. 13, 1865, and died May 12, 1924. He was married to Margaret Edens in 1891. To this union five children were born: Mack Elam, Mrs. Bessie Bettis, Mrs. Lee Doty, Mrs. Art Forkner and Bill Elam all of who with his wife survive him. Sir Elam was an honest consistent Christian man, honored and respected by all who knew him, and his family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the one of his son, Mack Elam, and were conducted by Rev. Bowman. The burial was in the Elm Springs Cemetery.

Five children were born to this union:
Macon, Bessie, Mary, Charlottie (sp?), and William Daniel.

Son of William Elam, bp. MO. & Elvira (Camp) Elam, bp. MO.

He was driving a team of mules when they ran away. He became entangled in the lines and was killed.

Gravesite Details

Death Certificate #15439 states his birth date as Sept. 13, 1866, and his age to be 57 years 5 months 29 days, which is not correct!
