The older of two children born to William Herman Coghill and Mateldia Radmacher, Josephine spent most of her life in or near Jacksonville with the exception of a few years in Fort Pierre South Dakota where her younger brother Richard was born. Her father died just 5 years prior to her; her mother and brother continued to live in Jacksonville, carrying on the gardening that her father had done in his final days.
