Wilburn Berry Arnold, age 92, of Hazlehurst, died Sunday November 6, 2011 in The Pavilion in Baxley.
Mr. Arnold was born December 24, 1918, in Turner County, Georgia; he was the son of the late Johnny Henry (Johnny Barry) Arnold and the late Rebecca Hall Arnold. Mr. Arnold was predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Runell Riner Simmons Arnold who passed away April 17, 2007. He served in the United States ...Army as a medic with a radar platoon in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. He returned home from the war in October 1944 and served at military facilities in Miami Beach, FL, Wilmington, NC, and finally at Drew Field in Macon, GA, before being discharged from the service in 1945. He returned to Unadilla, Georgia, and farmed on the family's property from 1945 to 1967. He began working for Flint Gas Company, which later bought out by Par Gas Company, in 1967, where he worked until June 1981. In Unadilla, he was a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church. He and his wife moved to Hazlehurst, GA, in 1995 and were members of New Beulah Primitive Baptist Church. He was predeceased by a brother, Oscar Franklin Arnold, and two sisters, Kizzie Alice Arnold and Viola Arnold Williamson; a step daughter, Jeanette Wasdin; & a step daughter-in-law, Nancy Simmons.
He is survived by step sons, Braxton (Evelyn) Simmons and Alton Simmons, step son-in-law, James Wasdin; nephews, Oscar Franklin Williamson and George Ed Williamson; nieces, Nancy Williamson Pruitt and Diane Hornik; 9 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; & several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2011 at 11:00AM at New Beulah Primitive Baptist Church in Hazlehurst with Elder J. E. Griffis, Rev. Thomas Simmons, & Elder Tommy Sarber officiating. Interment will follow in Satilla Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery
