BURKE, Thomas Michael, Sr.
Thomas Michael Burke, Sr., 92, of Stafford Ave., Bristol, beloved husband of Catherine (Rogers) Burke, joined Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, (June 11, 2002) after a short illness at the Bristol Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1909 in Torrington, son of the late Michael and Bridget (Gilligan) Burke. He attended St. Francis Grade School and Torrington High School, where he played varsity football his freshman year. Tommy loved to tell the story of the Torrington/Bristol High School 6-6 tie when Sugar Hugret played for Bristol. In 1927, he served in the Connecticut National Guard in Niantic. After working at the American Brass Company in Torrington, he moved to Bristol in 1929, where he was employed by the Bristol Brass Company for 45 years. He was General Foreman of the Rod and Wire Department when he retired in 1974. Through these years he saw many changes in personnel of whom he often remarked, ``I taught them all they knew of the brass industry, ... but not all that I knew.'' His men and their safety were always his first concern. He played on numerous company baseball and bowling teams, and was an avid Yankee fan all his life. Mr. Burke was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Palos Council #35) and a faithful member of St. Joseph Church. Besides his wife, Catherine, whom he was blessed in marriage for 67 years, he is survived by three sons and two daughters, Thomas Michael, Jr. and his wife, Marianne Burke, Peter David Burke, and Patricia Ann and her husband, Murdo Smith all reside in Bristol, Terrance Joseph and his wife, Kathleen Burke, reside in Farmington, NY and Catherine and George Lopez, reside in South Bend, IN. Mr. Burke was blessed with 12 grandchildren, Michael Anthony Burke, Laurie Burke Roberge and Susan Burke Blasi, children of Thomas Burke, Jr., Tammy Smith Brown, Theresa Smith Armington, Patricia Dianne Smith Vinci, and Murdo Thomas Burke Smith, children of Patricia Burke Smith, Courtney Burke Acoff and Sharon Burke Ryan, daughters of Terrance Burke, Thomas Burke Lopez, Martin Rogers Lopez and Patrick Arthur Lopez, sons of Catherine Burke Lopez. He also had 21 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers; and three sisters. Funeral services will be held Friday 9 a.m. from the O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville, to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bristol, where family and friends will celebrate a 10 am. Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
