On December 4, 1918, he married Hazel Irene Hawkins, his second cousin through the Pate family. They were married in Cannelton, Indiana.
Hubert suffered through many difficult times of American history, including World War I, the Era of Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His two sons, Carl and Bob, and his son-in-law Arthur Jackson, served in the army during World War II. His grandson, Hubert Wayne Miller, was killed during the Vietnam War.
A founding member of New Clover Creek Baptist Church, he assisted in the relocation of the church building in 1934 and 1935. On June 30, 1935, he was ordained a deacon there, a position he held for 33 years.
He died of a sudden heart attack while walking toward the main barn.
