Son of Alexander Clevenger and Elizabeth "Betsy" Childers, he married Lucy Margaret Hamilton 22 May 1842 in Pike County, Kentucky They moved to Morgan County about 1848 and had eleven children: John Nelson, Mary Ann "Polly", Alexander, Elizabeth, William, Sarah Jane, Susan "Sooky", Nancy, Eliza, Levi and Lucy Belle.
