Maren was born in Skelund, Aalborg, Denmark to Peder Bertelsen and Karen Sorensen. Her mother died when she was two years old and she was raised by her father and step mother. Maren married Anders Jensen (Vestergaard) 25 May, 1856 in Denmark. The Vestergaard name was used in Denmark but was dropped after they came to America in 1862. However the Vestergaard name was used in Utah sometimes to distinguish Anders from others of the same name in Sanpete County.
